Music Lessons & Programs

Learn it. Understand it. Make it yours.

A song can open up much more than a set of notes to learn. It can show you how chords fit together, how a bass line creates movement or how a small change in phrasing makes a melody your own.

At Blue Heron, we follow those connections. Founded by Italian guitarist and composer Davide Sponza, the school brings instrumental study, musical understanding and creative work into the same lesson. There is room to learn your first accompaniment, investigate a difficult passage, write something original and prepare to share it on stage.

Explore the instruments and experiences below.

Guitar

Study with Blue Heron’s founder, Davide Sponza.

Dave’s musical life spans original acoustic compositions, electric guitar and live performance with his Italian rock band, Espresso Rock. In 2026, he performed his composition Walk in Paris at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

In lessons, that experience becomes practical: make an accompaniment flow, connect chords across the fretboard, shape a bend or build a solo around the harmony. Explore rock, blues, fingerstyle, improvisation and songwriting, with theory explained through what you play. For beginners, the work starts with making those first chords and rhythms feel comfortable and sound musical.

Piano

Understand the music beneath your hands.

The keyboard gives us a clear way to explore how music fits together. In lessons, we use that advantage: a passage becomes easier to understand when you recognize its chords, hear its melody and see the patterns beneath the notes.

We work on reading, coordination and touch alongside that understanding. Beginners build short pieces step by step; developing players explore phrasing, accompaniment and how to bring out a melody over the other notes. When preparing for a recital, we also work on the complete performance: how to begin, keep the music moving and recover from a mistake.

Bass

Build the groove. Find your own line.

From the space in a D’Angelo groove to the movement of a blues bass line or the drive of a rock riff, we explore what makes a bass part work. Repertoire can range from Mac Miller and soul to rock and blues, connecting the music you enjoy with timing, articulation and an understanding of harmony.

With Dave, you can work toward creating your own bass lines: choosing chord tones, connecting them with passing notes, developing melodic ideas and improvising over a progression. We give just as much attention to the length of a note, a well-placed rest and the discipline of holding a groove.

Ukulele

Small enough to take along. Fun enough to keep picking up.

For adults who want an enjoyable way to make music without a demanding practice routine, the ukulele offers an inviting starting point. A few chords open the door to many songs, and its portability makes it easy to bring music into a quiet evening, a trip or a gathering with friends.

Dave also teaches ukulele as a first instrument for younger children. Its compact size and four nylon strings can make holding the instrument and trying early chord shapes more manageable for small hands. Lessons introduce rhythm, listening and coordination through short, playful musical activities. There is plenty to explore as interest grows, including fingerpicking, melodies and singing while playing.

Drums

Learn to carry a band.

A good drum part gives the other musicians something they can trust. Lessons focus on developing that foundation through coordination, steady time and control of the kit, then using it to shape a song.

Work on grooves that sit comfortably with a bass line, fills that lead into the next section and dynamics that make a chorus lift. For beginners, patterns are broken into manageable steps before bringing hands and feet together. As your playing develops, the focus expands to musical decisions: when to build energy, when to leave space and how to come back into the groove.

Voice

Make the song sound like you.

The way you breathe into a phrase, emphasize a word or hold back the volume can change the meaning of a song. Our planned voice offering will bring those expressive choices together with work on pitch, breathing, diction and comfortable vocal coordination.

The aim is to help singers explore suitable repertoire, work through difficult passages and develop confidence in their own sound.

Voice lessons are in development. Contact us to register your interest and hear when a teacher becomes available.

How We Teach

A chord change that interrupts the rhythm. A passage that falls apart when both hands come together. A scale you can play but cannot yet use in a solo. These are the kinds of challenges we work through in lessons, finding the cause and giving you a practical way forward.

We slow things down, listen closely and connect each exercise to the music you are learning. Theory becomes useful when it helps you recognize a chord progression, choose a note or understand a rhythm. As you progress, we make room for your own decisions through interpretation, improvisation and songwriting.

You leave with clear priorities for practice: what to work on, how to approach it and what to listen for. When you are preparing for a recital or a shared playing session, that preparation becomes part of the lesson too.

Weekly one-to-one lessons are available in 30-, 45- and 60-minute sessions.

Recitals & Performances

Give your practice a moment on stage.

Blue Heron students have shared their music at school recitals and community events, including our Christmas recital and the Kingwood City Limits student showcase. These occasions bring students, families and friends together around the music being developed in lessons.

Preparation starts well before the event. We choose suitable material, work through difficult sections and practice playing the piece from beginning to end. Students learn how to start with confidence, keep going through a slip and communicate something to an audience.

Hearing other students perform is part of the experience, too. A first piece and a more developed performance both have a place in the life of the school.

Making Music Together

Ensemble & Band Experience

In a group, you have to keep your place while listening to everyone else. You learn to enter together, maintain the pulse, adjust your volume and leave room for another player.

Blue Heron’s beginner and intermediate jam session at Green Oaks Tavern brought that work into a real music venue. Shared playing gives students a reason to use what they have practiced: follow a progression, support a melody, try an improvised phrase and find their way back if they get lost. Activities are organized around participating students and their experience.

Workshops & Special Programs

Some subjects benefit from exploring them together. A workshop can focus on building a groove, understanding a chord progression, taking a first approach to improvisation or turning a musical idea into a song.

When scheduled, workshops and special programs are included for members at no additional tuition.

Online Lessons

Work on your music, wherever your instrument is.

Online lessons take place live on Zoom. You play, receive feedback and try the adjustment during the session. We can slow down a passage, isolate a rhythm, examine a chord shape or work through an improvisation together, then set priorities for your practice.

Using your own instrument and practice space also lets us address the setup you use every day. A reliable connection, clear sound and a camera angle that shows your hands or posture help us work effectively. When arranging your trial, we will discuss whether the format suits your instrument and what you need to prepare.

Not sure where to start?

A free introductory lesson is the best way to explore the programs and find the right path.
